Protect Videos with a Password

Guide: Share password protected videos and embed them on your website

There are many situations where you want to share a video without making it fully public. You send someone a link, or you embed the video on a page, but you still want a password prompt before anyone can watch it.

That is exactly what many people search for when they type phrases like “protect video with password”, “share video with password” or “embed password protected video”. The core question is always the same: Who should actually be able to see this video?

Typical situations include ...

  • You share beta versions, product demos, or drafts and want to avoid them being visible outside the project.
  • You want to share internal videos, but only a selected group should get access.
  • You send out event or press material that should not be public yet, but certain people need to view it.
  • You ask for feedback on a video but do not want it to be accessible on the open web.
  • You provide course material or membership content that should only be available after entering a password.

Ignite covers exactly these scenarios. You set the password directly on the individual video.

Before we start with a how-to, a quick reality check: Password protection often feels more secure than it is. Someone can share the password with others, and the barrier is gone. If you send the password in the same email or message as the video link, the “protection” becomes more symbolic than effective. A password is a simple layer of control, and in many cases only one part of a broader video security setup. More on that later in the article.

How Password Protection Works in Ignite

You enable password protection for any video in just a few steps.

  1. Upload your video, then activate it so others can access it in the first place.
  2. Open the Embed section and scroll down to the password option.
  3. Enter your password and save.
  4. To disable it, simply toggle the switch off again.

Once enabled, the protection is active. The video will only play after the correct password is entered. That’s it. Simple, right?
You can now share the link or embed the video on your website.

One note: The feature is not available in all plans. You can find an overview here.

More ways to protect your videos (with Ignite)

A password is only one building block. Ignite offers several ways to prevent unwanted access. These are the key options we also highlight on our video security page.

  • The classic “Right click >> Save as” download trick for MP4 files does not work as easily with our player.
  • We are not YouTube and we do not have a public search. Your videos are not listed anywhere and do not appear in search engines. They only become visible when you embed them on your own site.
  • You can restrict playback to specific domains so your videos stay on your pages and cannot be embedded elsewhere.
  • You can disable or limit direct video links to prevent uncontrolled sharing.

These options complement password protection and give you a structured way to secure your content.
